One thing I refer to as my crown jewel is my home studio.
My set-up was largely inspired by my late colleague Sean Hall. He was a consummate professional, broadcaster and friend. Sean was also in to the technical side of radio. When I was working for WTOP and we were looking for a “bleep” to use in a story about censoring obscenities, I recorded one that was built in to a recording device. He said “that’s the wrong tone.”
My home studio didn’t begin to take shape until 2007 when I invested in a Behringer mixer, a used compressor and a real microphone. I eventually purchased a more robust sound card. With that equipment, I recorded stories and newscasts for WNAV, WYPR and NPR.
This year, it was time for an upgrade.

Twelve years after I started to form studio, the technology has improved greatly and has become more modular. Personally, I think it sounds darn good.
